One of Canada's most competitive programs
Waterloo Computer Science (CS) is consistently ranked among the top computer science programs in the world, and admission is extremely competitive. Many of the country's strongest students apply simultaneously to Waterloo CS, Waterloo Software Engineering, UofT Computer Science, and UofT Engineering Science.
Because these applicants overlap so heavily, positioning matters. We help students understand what genuinely distinguishes CS from SE and from UofT's programs — and build an application that stays competitive across all of them at once.
More flexible than Waterloo SWE
Waterloo CS is often treated by applicants as a fallback to Waterloo Software Engineering (SE) — something to apply to just in case SE doesn't work out. The university itself notes that graduates of either program will have similar career outcomes, since (as UWaterloo puts it) they'll “have many of the same core competencies from their program.”
At Admissions Avenue, we think about student-program fit above almost everything else. And on that measure, CS has two real strengths over SE that are worth understanding on their own terms — not just as a consolation prize.
Academic flexibility: electives, entry point, and pace
Unlike Waterloo Software Engineering, Waterloo CS is administered by the Faculty of Mathematics, alongside programs like Math, Data Science, and Computing & Financial Management. Students take a flexible sequence of computer science and mathematics courses, with room to specialize through electives, minors, and specializations as early as second year.
Waterloo invests heavily in computer science and mathematics research, and that shows up directly in the elective list: students get access to upper-year courses on genuinely current topics like AI and machine learning that aren't offered at many other Canadian universities. SE students don't get the same range of choice, since their curriculum is more tightly structured to meet the requirements of a professional engineering designation.
This flexibility also lowers the barrier to entry. CS suits students with little or no existing programming experience who are still genuinely curious about computer science as a subject — SE, by contrast, is hands-on from day one, and its curriculum effectively filters for students who already have strong programming skills going in.
Social flexibility: more independent work
The day-to-day student experience is genuinely different between the two programs. SE leans heavily on group work and cohort-based learning, while CS students can often choose to work independently or in groups on academic assignments instead.
That flexibility carries over into who students actually spend their time with. SE students take most of their classes with the same cohort throughout the program, whereas each CS student builds their own course schedule — meaning different classmates in every class, closer to the social rhythm of a typical undergraduate degree.
Co-op optional, and on the standard Math schedule
Most Waterloo CS students choose the co-op option, gaining up to six work terms at employers across technology, finance, research, and startups. Waterloo's CS co-op program is one of the largest and most established of its kind, with deep employer relationships built over decades.
One detail families often miss: CS co-op runs on the standard Faculty of Mathematics work/study sequence, not the Faculty of Engineering schedule used by Waterloo SE. The two are structured differently, which matters when comparing offers or planning around both programs.
How to apply: grades, the AIF, and CEMC contests
Admission to Waterloo CS is based primarily on grades, combined with the Admission Information Form (AIF). There is no video interview and no timed written portion for CS applicants, unlike Waterloo SE's Kira Talent interviews.
There is no separate Supplementary Information Form (SIF) for CS the way there is for Software Engineering. However, the Faculty of Mathematics does consider CEMC contest results — especially the CCC — for both admission and scholarship decisions, so contest participation still matters.
For students interested in entrance scholarships specifically, Waterloo takes whichever score is higher between the CSMC and the Euclid — so it's worth attempting both if a student's schedule allows.

Canadian Senior (and Intermediate) Mathematics Contest — for scholarships, Waterloo takes whichever score is higher between this and Euclid.

A deep, flexible technical ecosystem
Waterloo's Cheriton School of Computer Science is one of the largest and most research-intensive CS departments in Canada, with major strength in artificial intelligence, systems, theory, and human-computer interaction.
Because CS sits inside the Faculty of Mathematics rather than Engineering, students often have more room to choose electives, specializations, and minors as their interests develop — an important difference from the more fixed engineering curriculum.

We help students in Grades 9–11 build a CEMC contest record — starting with the CCC — that genuinely reflects their strengths and supports a strong CS application by Grade 12.

We coach students through reflection, outlining, and revision on every AIF short response, keeping the writing fully student-owned while sharpening how their technical interest and independent projects come through.
Communicating technical depth
We teach students to describe real projects and independent learning clearly and simply, without burying evaluators in jargon that obscures what they actually built.
CS vs. SE positioning
Many applicants aren't sure whether they want CS's flexibility or SE's engineering structure. We help students figure out which genuinely fits before the application is due.
Concurrent applications
Most CS applicants also apply to Waterloo SE, UofT Computer Science, and UofT Engineering Science. We coordinate the whole set so each application stays competitive and consistent.
Frequently asked
Competitive applicants typically present averages in the mid-to-high 90s, but Waterloo evaluates grades alongside the AIF and CEMC contest results. There is no published cut-off, and a strong AIF and contest record can meaningfully strengthen a borderline application.
Contest scores aren't mandatory, but the CCC in particular is closely watched by the Faculty of Mathematics for both admission and scholarship decisions. Starting contests early — in Grades 9–11 — gives students the strongest possible record by application time.
No. Unlike Waterloo Software Engineering, which requires Kira Talent interviews, Waterloo CS admission is based on grades, the AIF, and CEMC contest results — with no video interview or timed written component.
CS is a Faculty of Mathematics degree with more flexibility to specialize later, no Kira Talent interview, and a different co-op schedule. SE is an engineering degree with a fixed core curriculum and its own Kira Talent interview requirement. Many students genuinely fit either — we help students figure out which.
